Alke Missalla is a Hamburg-based designer and goldsmith. Her work centers around a distinct visual language, defined by clarity and essential forms. Created in seasonless series, the pieces are designed to combine naturally, moving with the wearer.
Each piece is made from recycled silver and gold, carefully handcrafted or cast in small batches. Founded in 2011, the Venusberg studio brings together a showroom and workshop, where bespoke and one-off pieces are developed alongside the collection.
Who do you design your jewellery for?
I design for people with a sense of self. I want to create pieces that accompany you rather than disguise you. They are quiet pieces that still possess a distinct presence.
How should people feel wearing your pieces?
Completely themselves. I want the pieces to move with you, highlighting what is already there without loudly demanding attention.
What shapes define your work?
I always return to basic forms: the circle, the line, the plane. My process is about shifting them, breaking them and reducing them to their core. I am interested in essence, not effect, in what remains when everything unnecessary is removed.
How does a new piece come into being?
Some ideas appear very quickly. Others require distance, a pause, and sometimes a complete restart. It is a constant listening to the material and the form. I know a piece is finished when nothing more can be added or taken away.
Where and how do you produce?
Every piece is designed and handcrafted in my Hamburg studio. For specialized techniques, I work with selected partners in Germany. Most of the precious metals I use are recycled and all stones are responsibly sourced.
What does good design mean to you?
Precision, reduction and intention. For me, design is a form of honesty. A good piece is something that endures in its form, its material and its meaning.
Where do you find inspiration for your aesthetic?
I am drawn to architecture, fashion and nature, anything that is reduced but never feels empty. I love clear systems with their own logic, and objects that age with grace.
Is there a piece particularly close to your heart?
It is always the one that is currently being worn. That is the moment when a piece becomes part of someone, and that is the true reason why I make them.
